Understanding Mineral Colours

Now we are coming to the most difficult part of making your own mineral make up:

  • How do you get the colour you want.
  • How much of what pigment do I need?

COLOUR COMBINING - Blending colours to get exactly the shade you want for your

  • Foundation
  •  Blush
  •  Bronzer
  •  Eye shadows

or other product can be challenging but it is the important next step in coming up with your own formulas.

Understanding what colour is! Colour scheme

Colour is a component of light. Light travels in different waves, different speeds and different length. If a light beam reaches our eye, we experience the sensation of colour.

The colours of pigments like mica or oxides are produced by absorbing and reflecting the different light-waves.

Many of our ways of thinking about colour come from Physicist Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727) He realise the rainbows form when light travelled through a prism meant that white light was made up of a spectrum of colours, which he organised into a circle – the colour wheel!

BASIC CONCEPTS

We are going to add colours to the base to make it coloured.

Pretty basic, right? I suggest when choosing a recipe, I find an easy way to make colours is to start with the iron oxide, ultramarine, magnesium, or chromium and to grind them with the base, then I add the mica to change the colour.

Handy ways to figure out how to make your own colours.

-  When using mica

- When using iron oxides

Finally, you will want to use both micas and iron oxides

For a matte colour, use more iron oxide. For a shiny colour, use more micas.

I think of Mineral Make up in three dimensions. You have your basic colour, your depth (I call it undertone), and your shine.

DETERMINING THE RIGHT COMBINATION OF COLORS FOR YOUR SKIN TONE

This is really not as difficult as it may seem.

To make the process easier, I use a commercial foundation for this demonstration and you can follow the process step by step, picture by picture. I will recommend that you use your favourite commercial foundation, (the one you have been using until now) we can always adjust to your skin tone later.

For your first foundation making, it is easier to match to a single colour in front of you than it is to try to match to your skin tone, which varies and is hard to look at while you are working.

Blending Pigment Concentrates - Matching Skin Tone

Human skin contains Three types of pigment;

  • MELANIN is the dark pigment

  • HAEMOGLOBIN is the pigment that gives red cells their colour.

  • CAROTENS are pigments that gives yellow tone to the skin.

All skin tones may be achieved my mixing three basic colours together:

Red, Black and Yellow and white is your foundation base.

Mixing colours for Mineral Eye Shadows

The possibilities are endless when it comes to formulating eye colors.

This by far is the most EXITING and creative mineral makeup you will work with. You can use so many different end effects: matte, satin, pearl, metallic, iridescent, medium sparkle and high sparkle.
